UNEMPLOYMENT FALLS: The unemployment rate fell in 39 states and Washington, D.C., in June, the
most states to show a drop this year. While that’s a positive sign, it occurred mainly because more people gave up searching for work and were no longer counted.
JOB CREATION STILL SLOW: Only 21 states saw net job gains in June. That’s down from 41 the previous month and is the fewest this year. The figure was reduced by the layoffs of thousands of temporary census workers.
MUDDLING THROUGH: The report is the latest sign that the sluggish economic recovery isn’t generating much hiring.
